Fatal Frame 2: The Crimson Butterfly Remake is Coming
Today, with the new Nintendo Direct, remake titles included Fatal Frame 2: The Crimson Butterfly, along with another Japanese publisher, Koei Tecmo. The original game, released on PlayStation 2 in 2003, was also made available to Xbox users in 2004. The remake will be released in early 2026 for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series.
There is no doubt that Koei Tecmo, after the 2014 release of Maiden of Black Water, aims to revive the cult series. As you may recall, the latest game was in 2021, and its predecessor, Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, was adapted for modern systems in 2023. Although Fatal Frame 2: The Crimson Butterfly is not a new game, it will be a game that sparks some movement in the series after a long time. We can see this as a positive development. It might also be a sign that we will start seeing new games in the series. We will keep track of the developments.
The story of the second game revolves around twin sisters Mayu and Mio Amakura. After returning to the area where they used to play as children and reminiscing about the past, Mayu sees a flying red butterfly in the forest and begins to follow it. Seeing this, Mio also follows her sister, and the twin sisters ultimately get trapped in a cursed village. Throughout the story, they learn about the terrifying events happening in the village and try to find a way to escape.
