In many countries, it is common to request toilet paper in public restrooms, but the new system in China is taking this habit to a different level. A video rapidly spreading on Instagram showcases this innovative approach. In the video, those who want to take toilet paper from a wall-mounted dispenser first have to watch an advertisement.
The process works as follows: when the QR code on the machine is scanned, users are shown a short commercial, and after the advertisement ends, they can obtain about six pieces of toilet paper. To get more, they need to watch another ad; alternatively, they can pay 0.5 Chinese yuan to switch to ad-free paper. However, this payment must be made digitally via a mobile device.
This mechanism can make it difficult for people to quickly meet their needs and requires pre-determining the amount of paper in the shared area. The app has sparked widespread discussion on Reddit: some users described it as “dystopian” and “sick,” while others reacted with the phrase “a reflection of hell.” Despite criticism, the system’s primary goal is presented as reducing paper consumption; wastage in public restrooms is considered a significant problem in many countries.
The claimed aim is to guide people to act according to their needs, thereby decreasing unnecessary paper usage. This situation encourages some users to carry their own toilet paper; it is noted that carrying toilet paper with them is already a common norm in China.
