Meta is taking a new step after the goal of commercializing the augmented reality glasses Project Orion: robotics. According to statements by the company’s CTO Andrew Bosworth, Meta is conducting research in robotics just like Apple, Google, and Tesla. However, the company’s main goal is not to enter hardware competition but to license and spread the developed software.
Meta is shifting focus from AR glasses to the field of robotics
It is reported that Meta is working on a project called “Metabot,” but the focus is on software solutions that will power the robots. According to Bosworth, the bottleneck is in software. In this context, the robotic team led by Marc Whitten and Meta’s Superintelligence Labs are collaborating on a software infrastructure called “world model.” This model will initially provide simulation for robots to move their hands flexibly and will later enable more complex tasks.
In February 2025, it was revealed that Meta was also researching robots that could perform household chores such as cleaning or folding laundry. However, it seems that bringing such products to consumers will take a long time.
Meta is not alone in the robotics race. Apple is working on screen-equipped desktop robotic arms, while Tesla regularly introduces its humanoid robot called “Optimus.” Although Meta’s goal of replacing smartphones with AR glasses has not yet been achieved, it is certain that the company will make significant investments in robotic technologies in the future.
