OpenAI has introduced an additional timer feature for GPT-5 Thinking mode to ChatGPT Plus users. This allows users to control the thinking duration and choose between Standard and Extended options. Meanwhile, ChatGPT Pro subscribers can access two new options in addition to these two main modes: Light (the fastest option) and Heavy (responses with in-depth logic). New feature: The ability to adjust thinking time according to user needs with fast or deep steps.
According to OpenAI’s official statement: “GPT-5 Thinking responses can sometimes be lengthy. Now you can instantly select the appropriate option for your needs.” The Light and Standard options produce quick, reasoning-based responses, while the Extended and Heavy modes offer longer, more comprehensive answers.
How can you change the thinking time? When you enable the Thinking option, a dropdown menu containing Standard and Extended choices will appear in the message window. For Pro users, this menu will include two additional options.
Mobile application limitations: The new thinking duration is currently only accessible via the web. This feature is not available in iOS and Android apps at the moment, and it is not expected to be added in the near future. OpenAI plans to introduce this feature to mobile apps within a few weeks. Free ChatGPT users cannot use this new option; it is available only with Plus or Pro subscriptions.
