As artificial intelligence technologies transform our daily digital experiences, Perplexity’s Comet browsing browser has taken another significant step. It now offers this feature, previously limited to long-term high-cost subscriptions, to everyone free of charge. Thus, Comet aims to strengthen its position as a competitor to Google Chrome in the browser market and pledges that this service will remain permanently free with the motto “The Internet is better with Comet.”

The most distinctive feature of Comet is its approach to artificial intelligence, placing it at the core of the browsing experience rather than as a feature added later to traditional browsers. The browser hosts Perplexity’s powerful AI search tools and a personal assistant that facilitates internet browsing for the user. This assistant aims to make browsing easier and particularly guides users through complex tasks such as shopping, travel bookings, and daily life management. According to Perplexity, this new approach allows users to achieve more with less effort online.

When Comet was first released, it was available exclusively to Perplexity Max subscribers paying $200 per month. Over time, access was expanded to Pro plan subscribers with more affordable prices and to millions of users selected from the waiting list. Ultimately, the decision was made to make Comet completely independent of subscriptions by Perplexity.

For exclusive content, a new subscription package called Comet Plus was announced alongside free access. This package, announced in August, offers users news content curated from selected publishers. Dubbed by CEO Aravind Srinivas as being similar to Apple News Plus, the first partners listed alongside this service include: CNN, Conde Nast, Fortune, Le Figaro, Le Monde, The Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post.

Comet Plus access will be automatically provided to current Perplexity Pro and Max subscribers, while other users can access it for $5 per month. You can check here to download the Comet web browser for free.
