The video published by SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio discusses the mechanics of the new Virtua Fighter game, which offers a simplified yet deeper experience. While preserving the core of the game, it aims to provide players with an enjoyable fighting experience. The studio, currently working on various projects, highlights that one of them is a completely new version of Virtua Fighter. The announcement was made in December 2024, with development ongoing for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series. Trailers released at the Tokyo Game Show 2025 showcased some of the core mechanics.
In the new Virtua Fighter, there will be two different rule sets, each creating a distinct gameplay feel. The standard rule set is played based on known rules, where a victory is achieved when the opponent’s health drops to zero or they are pushed out of the arena; the other set, called Uprising, preserves the game’s fundamental rules while introducing new systems designed to change momentum. This structure aims to provide a more accessible experience, especially for new players.
The studio mentions working on four new mechanics: Break & Rush, Stunner, Stun Combo, and Flow Guard. Break & Rush offers a reward mechanic that focuses attacks on specific areas of the opponent, rendering them ‘Broken,’ and can be used after sufficient damage is dealt. Then, the next round begins. Stunner stands out as a new combo system, enabling more fluid combos and working in harmony with the basic mechanics. Flow Guard is a mechanic focused on defense, operating parallel to Break & Rush, making it more natural and intuitive to block enemy attacks.
In statements by Riichiro Yamada, it is expressed that although the final name has not yet been finalized, the goal of designing a fighting game enjoyable for everyone with these innovations continues. Virtua Fighter’s roots are being adapted to modern times while strictly adhering to the vision of series creator Yu Suzuki. Yamada emphasizes that the series concept was developed during testing with a simple three-button control scheme, suitable for the Game Center-focused environment of that era. Therefore, the new version also respects the core concept and aims for a design that appeals to a broader audience.
